The Org Chart draws your organization two ways. Reporting Lines shows who reports to whom, built from each employee's Direct manager. Department Structure shows how departments nest, built from each department's Parent Department. Use it to check the structure after onboarding or a reorganization, to explain reporting to new staff, and to export a simple employee–manager list.
The chart is read-only. To change it, edit the employee or the department it is drawn from.

Wide trees scroll sideways inside their card.
Reporting Lines
- Top of the tree: every active employee with no Direct manager, sorted by name.
- Each card: name, job title (or —) and department.
- Show/hide team (n): shown when the person has n direct reports. It expands or collapses them. Everything starts expanded.
- Direct reports are shown under their manager, sorted by name.
- Search: keeps a person if their name, employee number or job title matches, or if anyone below them matches. So you still see the chain down to the match.
- Empty: No reporting lines yet.
Department Structure
- Top of the tree: active departments with no parent.
- Each card: department name, :count employees (in that department only), and the manager's name if set.
- Show/hide branches (n): expands or collapses sub-departments.
- View department: opens the department page.
- Empty: No departments — "Start by adding the first department to build the organization chart", with Add Department (which opens the Departments list) if you can create employees.
Export CSV
The file has the columns employee_number, name, job_title, department and manager, with one row per active employee, sorted by name. When a search is typed, only matching employees are exported (by name, number or job title). Unlike the on-screen tree, the export does not include their managers.
Tasks
Read who reports to whom
- Open People → Org Chart.
- In Reporting Lines, find the top person and use Show/hide team to fold the branches you don't need.
Find one person's chain
- Type part of a name, an employee number or a job title in the search box, for example
Haddad. - Reporting Lines narrows to the chains that lead to matching people.
- Clear the search to see everyone again.
Fix a wrong reporting line
- Note who is misplaced.
- Open that employee in Employees, click Edit, and set Direct manager (or clear it to make them a top-level person).
- Click Update, then return to the chart. It reloads with the change.
Fix the department tree
- Open the department in Departments and click Edit.
- Change Parent Department or Department Manager, and click Save Department.
Export the list
- Optionally type a search.
- Click Export CSV. Open the file in Excel or Google Sheets.
What the chart includes
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Top-level employees | Only active employees with no direct manager. |
| Direct reports | Everyone whose Direct manager is that person. This can include people who have left, if their record still points to the manager. Clear their manager, or accept them as history. |
| Top-level departments | Only active departments with no parent. |
| Sub-departments | All children of a shown department, including inactive ones. |
| An employee whose manager has left | They are not shown at the top, because they still have a manager. They appear under that manager only if the manager is themselves shown somewhere in the tree. |
Permissions
| Role | View chart | Export CSV |

| Manager-level and member-level SolaHR roles (default) | Yes | Yes, if the plan has data export |

The chart shows the whole organization to everyone who can open it.
Worked examples
Example 1 — check a new hire's place
Al Noor Trading LLC adds Sara Khan as a Sales Associate in Retail Sales, with Direct manager Omar Haddad.
- Open People → Org Chart and search
Sara. - Reporting Lines shows the chain Mariam Ali (General Manager) → Omar Haddad (Retail Sales Manager) → Sara Khan (Sales Associate, Retail Sales).
- Omar's card now reads Show/hide team (5) instead of (4).
Example 2 — tidy the chart after a restructure
After Sales is split into Retail Sales and Corporate Sales (see Departments), HR reviews the chart.
- Department Structure shows Management with Show/hide branches (4): Retail Sales (9 employees, Omar Haddad), Corporate Sales (4 employees, Layla Mansour), Finance (3), Warehouse (11).
- Reporting Lines shows three top-level people: Mariam Ali, Layla Mansour and Khalid Nasser. Khalid is a warehouse picker who has no Direct manager.
- HR edits Khalid and sets Direct manager to the warehouse supervisor. On reload only Mariam and Layla are top-level.
- Layla should report to Mariam. HR sets her Direct manager to Mariam. Now Mariam is the only top-level person.
- HR clicks Export CSV with no search. The file has 28 rows (all active staff), with each person's manager in the
managercolumn. HR shares it with management.
How it connects
| Screen | What feeds the chart |
|---|---|
| Employees | Direct manager, Department, job title and status. |
| Departments | Parent Department, Department Manager, Department is active. |
| Job Titles | The title shown on each card. |
| Team access | Not affected. Reporting lines and department managers give no access. |
Tips and common problems
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Someone is at the top who shouldn't be | Their Direct manager is empty. | Edit the employee and set it. |
| A department is missing | It is inactive (top level only), or it sits under a parent you collapsed. | Activate it, or expand the parent. |
| A former employee appears under a manager | Their record still names that manager. | Clear their Direct manager. |
| Export CSV fails | Your plan lacks data export. | Upgrade, or copy from the screen. |
| Search finds no one | The search only covers name, number and job title, not department. | Search by a person's name instead. |
